The sumo stand at 5:30 AM is controlled chaos — drivers shouting destinations, luggage rope-tied to roofs. I squeezed into a Bomdila sumo with seven strangers and watched Assam’s flat green give way to real mountains by 10.
Bomdila at dusk was the right call — at ~8,000 ft it broke the altitude gain into sane pieces, and its monastery at sunset was a quiet preview of Tawang. Next morning: Sela Pass, with April snow walls, half-frozen Sela Lake, and the genuinely moving Jaswant Garh memorial. The driver stopped at Nuranang Falls unasked.
Tawang sits at 10,000 ft and I took day one slow. The monastery — India’s largest — deserves half a day; the war memorial’s evening light-and-sound show was the unexpected highlight.
Bum La day: 7 AM shared taxi with four others — PT Tso, Sangetsar (Madhuri) Lake, then the pass at 15,200 ft, where the wind chill cut through everything and I still grinned. No photography at the pass — the army is clear — but the lakes en route are unreal.

- Shared sumos don’t stop for sightseeing. Want Sela photo stops? Hire a full vehicle or accept it.
- Carry cash — Tawang’s ATMs are unreliable.
- Bum La wind chill at 15,200 ft is brutal — thermals, extra socks, heavy layers, even in April.
- Keep ILP printouts + original ID on you at all times. Every gate checks.

Can the ILP be done on arrival at the border, or must it be online?
On-arrival counters exist (Guwahati, Tezpur), but peak-season queues are real. I applied online 4 days ahead and walked through every checkpost. Online is the move.
Is Bum La doable in December?
Usually not — heavy snow closes it in deep winter. March–June and September–November are reliable; even in April, carry full winter gear.
