Everyone says “6–7 hours” for Kathmandu–Pokhara. Everyone is lying, or has never taken the bus. Mine took nine hours with four halts, and I was one of the lucky ones — monsoon-season travelers report twelve.
But here’s the thing: once I stopped fighting the duration, it became one of my favourite travel days in Nepal. The road follows the Trishuli river valley for hours, and from the right side of the bus you get this rolling panorama of terraced hills, suspension bridges, and villages clinging to slopes. I read half a book, napped, ate a highway dal bhat at a halt, and watched the Annapurnas start appearing on the horizon as we descended toward Pokhara.
In Pokhara I kept it simple: a Lakeside dorm, sunrise hike to the World Peace Pagoda (free, and genuinely stunning), an hour on Phewa Lake in a shared boat (NPR ~600), and the Devi’s Falls + Gupteshwor Cave half-day combo. Two full days, and I spent less than one dinner would cost back home.

- Right side of the bus, Kathmandu→Pokhara. Left side on the way back. This matters.
- Night buses exist from Balaju but you miss all the scenery — take the morning bus.
- Book a day ahead in peak season (Oct–Nov, festival time).
- Walk out of the Pokhara bus park to find a taxi — the touts inside charge more.

Tourist bus vs Greenline — is Greenline worth double the price?
Only if you really want the included lunch and guaranteed comfort. The standard tourist bus was perfectly fine for 9 hours. I’d spend the difference on two extra days in Pokhara instead.
I’m traveling in July — should I worry about the road?
Yes, genuinely. Monsoon landslides (Jun–Aug) can stretch this to 10–12 hours or close the road temporarily. If your dates are fixed in monsoon, keep a buffer day and check conditions the evening before.
