navigationHow I Did It

  • check_circleMy partner and I took the train Delhi → NJP (sleeper, ~₹800 × 2) and a shared cab to Gangtok (~₹400 × 2).
  • check_circleIn Gangtok, we joined a 2-day/1-night shared North Sikkim package to Lachung + Yumthang (~₹5,500/person including transport, stay, and meals) instead of a private vehicle (~₹14,000–22,000).
  • check_circlePermits were handled by the operator — we just handed over photo IDs and 2 passport photos each the evening before.
  • check_circleAdded Zero Point as a group add-on (~₹300/person split) and did Tsomgo Lake as a separate shared day trip (~₹800 × 2).

articleMy Experience

Every quote we got for North Sikkim started at ₹30,000+ for two. Then a Gangtok hotel owner told us what locals know: shared 2D/1N departures run almost daily in season at a fraction of the price. We paid ₹5,500 each, all-in. Same mountains, same valley, same snow.

The drive to Lachung is a full-day event — 6–7 hours with waterfall stops and a lunch halt where our whole vehicle bonded over thukpa. By Yumthang we were one noisy family.

Yumthang in April is the postcard: rhododendrons across the meadows, yaks grazing, snow on the ridges. The whole vehicle voted yes on Zero Point (₹300 each), and we played in snow at 15,300 ft like kids. Seven days, two people, every highlight of Sikkim — for what agencies quote for a 3-day private trip.

The shared North Sikkim package is this trip’s biggest lever: ~₹11,000 for two vs ₹18,000–22,000+ private for the same circuit. Same itinerary — you’re just splitting the vehicle.

verified_userReality Check

savingsWhat actually saved money?

The shared package, sleeper trains, and eating at the package’s included meals instead of restaurants in Lachung (where everything is priced for captive tourists).

savingsWhat wasn’t worth saving money on?

The cheapest operator we found (₹3,500/person) had bad reviews on vehicle condition — we paid ₹5,500 for a reputable one. At 15,000 ft, that’s not where you economize.

warningBiggest mistake?

Not carrying cash from Gangtok. There are no ATMs in Lachung and our UPI failed at the only shop that mattered.

sentiment_very_satisfiedBiggest surprise?

How cold Lachung gets at night in April — near freezing. Our “light jackets” were a joke.

replayWould I do this route again?

Yes — but in May next time, for peak rhododendron bloom.

tips_and_updatesWhat I Wish I Knew

  • Permits need a photo ID + 2 passport photos per person, submitted the evening before departure.
  • Carry ALL your cash from Gangtok — no ATMs in Lachung, patchy network for UPI.
  • April–May is bloom season; December–February is snow season. Pick your postcard.
  • The Gangtok → Lachung drive is 6–7 hours — sit on the left side going up for the best views.

Is the shared North Sikkim package comfortable for a couple, or is it too backpacker-ish?

WFounder Author

It’s comfortable — you get a proper hotel room in Lachung (twin/dbl), all meals, and the vehicle is usually a shared Xylo/Innova. The only “shared” part is the vehicle and the itinerary. Totally couple-friendly.

How do I verify the operator is legit before paying?

WFounder Author

Book through your Gangtok hotel’s recommended operator or a well-reviewed MG Marg agency, pay a small advance (not full), and get the pickup time, vehicle type, and inclusions in writing on WhatsApp. That’s what I did.
